For more details, see at the end of this text ( Getting There). This short walk first climbs uphill to view the Long Man of Wilmington, a giant hill figure carved into the hillside. This walk is great on a windy day as you’ll be protected from the breeze beneath the tree canopy – and it’s a safer option than wandering too close to the nearby cliff edges! The Long Man of Wilmington or Wilmington Giant is a hill figure on the steep slopes of Windover Hill near Wilmington, East Sussex, England. Turn right onto the South Downs Way and back to the Plough and Harrow for some well deserved refreshments. 9.5 miles (Fancy Free Walks) 6.2 miles (10k), 2 and a half hours for the AA walk; good pubs and tea rooms in Alfriston (note that this is a short detour off the AA walk) and Litlington (Fancy Free Walk only). The walk finishes across the river and past the 14th century church into the picture-perfect village of Alfriston, a popular place to explore. In the distance, you will have views of the White Horse of Litlington on the hill to the west. After passing the figure the views become vast and at one point you can even glimpse the ocean glistening in the distance. Unfortunatly, when i try to download this map, it leads me to the map of walk n°1 ( alfriston village walk). Even allowing for the small detour we took to the car park and back, this is still longer than advertised.

We clocked closer to 15.5km with a couple of minor detours.

The Long Man is 235 feet (72 m) tall, holds two "staves", and is designed to look in proportion when viewed from below.

The walk begins in the free Long Man car park in Wilmington, near Polegate, East Sussex, postcode BN26 5SL, just off the A27, easily accessible via the A22, A26 or A23.

Very little on road so great for dogs.

Before you get to Jevington, head into Friston Forest and turn right at Charleston Manor once you exit the trees. The trail offers a number of activity options.This circular walk begin in the town of Litlington at the Plough and Harrow. Locally, the figure was once often called the "Green Man".

It starts with a climb round to his head followed by a walk along the top of the Downs with outstanding views. The Long Man is a large figure thought to have originated from the 16th or 17th century. Towards the end of the walk, you pass above the mysterious 235 foot hill figure of the The longer Fancy Free walk also takes in the downlannd hamlet of Folkington, as well as Litlington and Alfriston itself.I’m plannig a trip in England with my familly, and i was interest with the The Star’s Long Man of Wilmington Walk.

Wilmington also has a pub and tea rooms, but these are a short walk away from the start/finish. It's a fairly easy climb on a good path with splendid views of the South Downs and the coast to enjoy. Originally thought to originate in the Iron Age or Neolithic period, an investigation in 2003 has shown the figure to originate in the 16th or 17th century.

From the top of the hill, there are fine views over the Cuckmere River, Friston Forest and the village of Litlington. Walk north along the Cuckmere towards Alfriston and head east on the Downs toward the Long Man. Overall I found the scenery to be quite boring and it was very windy which got irritating very quickly.
