The explanations for these bizarre occurrences are intriguing, as they give insight into how each family member is coping with the loss. If someone were to cleverly incorporate this movie onto PBS' program schedule, there's a very strong possibility that some people would believe "Lake Mungo" to be the real deal. Joel Anderson delivers the chills in an effectively subtle manner, and bravely allows the horror to build naturally as the story progresses to its inevitable conclusion. The true beauty of "Lake Mungo" is Anderson's refusal to employ cheap theatrics or tired genre conventions to elicit his scares. Lake Mungo is a mystery, a thriller and a ghost story told in documentary form that illustrates how the dead can forever haunt the living. "We need to make sure we get onto it quickly, but everything we do is onsite and by foot survey. They represent the early emergence of human spiritual beliefs and provide a glimpse into the care provided to kin through Australia’s deep history. For obvious reasons, the film will be hard for most to digest, due in part to the picture's History Channel aesthetic. "It's a very valuable lesson in cultural awareness as well. To support the foundation for his deception, Anderson has included family photos, home videos, and a plethora of realistic performances, all of which add weight and dimension to the story. Their respective breakdowns, as well as the manifestations of their grief, are handled with a surprisingly amount of heart and sophistication. SPOILERS AHEAD! The film received critical acclaim during its limited release. Unlike "The Blair Witch Project" and last year's success story "Paranormal Activity", "Lake Mungo" presents itself as the genuine article, complete with interviews with those who lived through these horrific events. "You just sit down and look at the stars and you could feel your culture wash over you — it's eye-opening to how old the culture is. The planet’s oldest ritual burials, Mungo Lady was cremated, Mungo Man adorned with ochre. LAKE MUNGO has already been bought for a US remake but this little indie original from Australia is the real deal: a genuinely scary ghost film like THE SIXTH SENSE or the 1961 film THE INNOCENTS.
