Went on this walk yesterday. Turn left onto the Olinda-Basin Road and walk about 200 metres until Caterpillar Track on the right. So – organise the puppy-pack, jump in the car and enjoy a few nights away with ‘man's (and woman's!) Dozens of cars line the road, so many people use the track at the same time that it is crowded and just not a pleasant hike. At the junction with Tower Track, turn right and head down the hill.Turn right onto ZigZag Track, then left onto Channel 10 Track. Dodds Road joins Range Road, turn left and walk the short distance back to Olinda.Walked on 27.8.16 in an anticlockwise direction, seems to be the best for the slopes in wet conditionsSo Helen and I completed this today. Mid-week, it is lovely, out of holiday times.Far too many people also have their dogs off-lead on the track – This is against the law, and really upsetting for other people. Dos off lead, and lyrebirds ? Follow Channel 10 Track until meeting Dandenong Creek Track, turn right, staying on Dandenong Creek Track until coming to the Olinda-Basin Road. Both the “link trails” between Dandenong Creek Track and Range Rd were closed so I walked down the road a bit and went down Todd Rd.Did this walk today and it was great, might get a little slippery on some on the smaller tracks in the coming weeks. The family dog is generally left at home, mainly because of the National Park status of the Dandenongs. Get off in Olinda and walk along Olinda-Monbulk Road to the old golf course and walk down from there or get off the bus in Mt Dandenong Village or by the Pig and Whistle Tavern and walk down Dickens Street to Fordyce Road then left onto Falls Road to Mathias Track.Dogs can be let off lead just inside the golf course. Mathias Track is an easy, pleasant walk that passes by the National Rhododendron Gardens and RJ Hamer Arboretum. Such a beautiful track!
From the former golf course in Olinda, walk down to the lowest left-hand corner and you will find access to Mathias Track where you can walk your pooch, on-leash. You feel the need to Find Your Self in nature but don’t want to leave the loved up pooch behind? The old golf course is a fabulous area, take a picnic or walk to the very top of the course and buy a coffee and snacks. Warm and rustic, the Piggery Café is unsurprisingly housed in a restored piggery and stables at Burnham Beeches, an Art Moderne mansion and estate in the Dandenong Ranges. I found the trails well groomed and navigation was easy with the gpx file.Walked this on 29/12/18 anticlockwise, great hike, took 4.5 hours.
We had lunch at Mt Dandenong, with picnic tables and toilets. Mathias forest track and Olinda Golf Course dog-friendly walk (Olinda, The Dandenongs) *Please note that dogs must be on-lead along Mathias Track as it runs adjacent to the Dandenong Ranges National Park. Track a little more 'open' than my preference, I like a canopy of trees. A short way down Chalet Road, turn left onto the Golf Course Track / Rock Track. Good walk and surprised me on the last hill. OR walk up to the Olinda Falls Picnic Area (toilets available) turn left on Falls Road then right onto Mechanics Track. The golf course is used by many locals to walk their dogs off lead. Follow Golf Course Track/Rock Track, at the junction with Cornius Track, keep left. Travel blogger, living in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges. From the Green Mountain trailhead, walk along the Border Track for 3.2km and then branch off onto the Toolona Creek circuit. The circuit walk of the summit of Mt Dandenong links two large sections of the national park, visits Olinda Falls, Mt Dandenong, Arboretum and two of the best view points overlooking Melbourne.
