Prince was not in the habit of saying which songs were written for which person.I used the search box also for this to come up and has been mentioned several times it is about her, but hey at the end of the day, only Prince knew for sure.
I think he was extremely lonely.
That was easy to tell just by watching her in PR and early interviews with Vanity 6. He had a great way to keep us guessing whom he was refering to in many of his songs I had also read that the song was inspired by his arguments with Susan (it's written in several of the Biogrpahies), but I've always thought that the lyrics connect more with his situation with Vanity at that time. Love is God, God is love, girls and boys love God above~ Love is God, God is love, girls and boys love God above~ Love is God, God is love, girls and boys love God above~ Love is God, God is love, girls and boys love God above~ If they look at it, it’s very obvious. They were his muses to inspire the songs. NO WAY in hell all of that emotion and those intense lyrics were just specifically for that little scene in the film - especially considering Apollonia hadn't even been cast yet, and they hadn't begun filming. Also, during the performance of the song at the Januray 21st P&M show his words to the audience are very telling, as he seems to be admitting to the long-held story, and this was a month before Vanty's unexpected passing.
“Do you want him or do you want me,” that was written for that scene in Purple Rain specifically. all rights reserved. She was not upset nor critical, just observant. The interview was about Sheryl so perhaps Dan was satisfied with her insights and moved on.Sheryl seemed very self-aware and grounded in the interview.I wanted to watch it again as it was really good;it was held on her beautiful horse-farm in Nashville, in her gorgeous studio. I was very impressed with her maturity...high emotional intelligence.Just thought of this: Have you seen the duet between Prince and Sheryl? Susan and Prince were very young. It was also said that Susan was going to put up with Prince's messing around ...so she just left him,IT WAS said that she left him because he was infatuated with Vanity.
He was not angry with her, he just turned off the light towards her when he was finished and started something else. If they look at it, it’s very obvious. At least Prince did walk out of the room when he started playing. Not sure it he did that on the spot.I found the interview through AXS/Dan Rather but I had to pay $2. But, she was smiling. "...his girlfriend who has been with him, lived in the same house as him, grew up with him, that was his big crush from school...Kim was an unsung hero in my opinion.

However, the majority of the song is Prince begging this woman to choose him over the "other guy" in her life, and if he has to wait any longer for her he's going to go crazy - "don't make me lose my mind, babe..". Yes, there was quite a handful of significant women throughout Prince's life.
