Millions of people starved to death, disease swept through weakened communities, and homeless refugees were stuck without shelter. Throughout the whole Yangtze Valley around 15% of the wheat and rice crops were destroyed, with the proportion being much higher in the flood affected areas.As well as inundating rural areas, the flood caused widespread destruction to a number of cities.
