This is a film that seems to start slow, but there is a plot, and many things will be revealed to you. Written and directed by Pedro Almodovar, starring Penelope Cruz and with a cast that includes six women who all jointly won the best actress award at the 2006 Canne Film Festival this is another supurb film from the Spanish director. There’s no point in my going over the storyline, but it covers the relationships between women (mother/daughter, sisters, friends) with great truthfulness and a lot of humour but it is not ‘fluffy’, there’s an underlying grit running through the narrative. Had to buy this as my copy had been lent out and lost.. Never again! My own favorite Almodovar is Hable con Ella. A nice bonus is the interview with Almodovar and the actresses, all sitting around a big round table, and unlike some boring interviews one sometimes find as a bonus with DVDs of directors with an ego of Napoleonic proportions who just drivel on, this interview is worth the price of the DVD in itself. Volver is a truly exceptional film and one well worth buying on DVD because it's the kind of film you're likely to want to watch time after time. VOLVER is only my second foray into Pedro Almodovar, and it was a strangely compelling watch even if I predicted a couple of the narrative twists long before they were actually revealed.
